THE AGE OLD PRACTICES AND KNOWLEDGE REGARDING FOOD AND MEDICINAL PLANTS SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED AS OUR HERITAGE.
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Prakrithi – Nattuvaidhya Sangamam (Kerala State Traditional Health Practitioners meet) urged the Government to utilize the age old practices and knowledge regarding food and medicinal plants. These medical practices and knowledge should be recognized as our heritage. In the meet experiences of cure through traditional methods where modern medicine failed was shared. Those who undertake these medical practices without fame and wealth are dubbed as unqualified and fake. There should be a scientific enquiry into these age old practices and due recognition should be given to the practitioners.
As part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of Santhigram, the meet was held in association with SAMAGRA – Holistic Health Promotion Council and State Resource Center at Thycaud, KSTA Hall on 09 Oct.2011. Dr. P. K. Jayrus, President, Holistic Health Promotion Council and Former Head, Holistic Medicine and Stress Research Unit, Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram presided over the function. Ms. Annamma Devasya (Chediyamma) from Mukkam who is known for making home remedies using more than six hundred medicinal plants inaugurated the meet. Famous poet and environmentalist Smt. Sugathakumari offered felicitations. Health & Environment activist Sri. K .V. Sivaprasad (One earth one Life, Kannur) made the keynote address. Dr. K. G. Sreekumar, Chief Executive Officer, State Medicinal Plants Board, Dr.T. Sundaresan Nair, Director, State Resource centre former UNICEF Project Officer and Sri. K. Vaman addressed the gathering.
Sri. Cherthala K Mohanan Vaidyar (Traditional Ayurveda),Annamma Devasya (Grandmothers’ remedies), Mannarkadu Sri. M.I. Mathews Vaidyan (Tribal Medcine), Sri. Chinnan Vaidyar (Traditional treatment), Kozhikkode Sri. Damodaran Vaidyar (Traditional Medicine), Dr Vijayan (Holistic Health), Dr Gangadaharan Chinnangath (Natural Food), Nedungadappalli Samjohn (Acupressure) and Dr. Swami Padmanabha (Sidha Medicine) were honoured by Sri. Rufus Daniel, Vice President, District Panchayat.
Around 200 traditional practitioners and patients who got cured from all over Kerala and NGOs working in the area attended the meet and shared their experiences. Dr. S. Rajasekharan (TBGRI, Palode) was the moderator. Sri. L. Pankajakshan, Santhigram Director welcomed the gathering and Sri. S Harish Kumar, General Secretary, Samagra Holistic Health Council offered vote of thanks.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Shashi Tharoor MP will inaugurate a year-long silver jubilee celebrations of Santhigram on August 15 at the Zonal Office building of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation at Vizhinjam at 10 am. Jameela Prakasam MLA will preside over the function. The Holistic Health Care Sub Centre will be inaugurated by Mayor K Chandrika. Kumar Kalanand Mani will deliver the keynote address on the theme ‘Good Governance, Transparency and Decentralisation.’ Santiago, Regional Representative of Andheri Hilfe E V Bonn, will be the chief guest. Block and village panchayat presidents will be the guests of honour. G Happykumar, Deputy Mayor, Johnson Joseph, UDF leader and P Ashok Kumar, BJP leader of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation will be present. Civic Chandran will introduce the topic of the seminar ‘Role of Civil Society in the Lokpal Bill’ followed by the inaugural session.
